What to do to take care of Raspberry Bushes?

Raspberry bushes are a favourite fruit and many homeowners grow the bush in their gardens. Taking care of the raspberry bushes is somewhat different from other bushes; once the canes begin bearing fruit, the plant does not need much care. In the early spring when new shoots appear is when the work needs to be done as the old canes need to be removed. The following are some tips that are helpful in taking care of your raspberry bushes.

  • Plant the raspberry bushes in your garden in a row so that you can easily walk around the plants or plant them up against a fence or wall.
  • Have easy access to water and add fertilizer to the soil. The best choice of fertilizer is organic.
  • The raspberry plants need pruning every year in the spring. They do not produce fruit the first year but do so in the second year. Therefore, you should start pruning the canes when the canes are entering into the third year.
  • Mulching is also a good idea. It is recommended to use 10 cm (4 inches) of mulch to preserve the moisture to keep the bushes productive.
  • T-shaped stakes should be used. It is the best way to keep your raspberry plants upright and straight so that picking the berries is made easier.
